Have you ever used Windows Add or Remove Programs ? It's a program that keeps track everytime you install something onto your computer. Unfortunatley, everytime you stop using a program you don't think to install it. Everynow and then it is a good idea to use windows uninstall and see if there are things that you don't want or need.
To access it go to Start->Control Panel-> Classic View -> Add or Remove Programs. Remove everything that you are not using anymore.
This goes with removing programs, you've probably heard of your registery. But what exactly is it? Keeping it simple, just imagine that there is a directory somewhere that lists everything that is installed on your computer. This special list can become corrupted or incorrect due to improper installations and uninstallations of software.
